We are living in a world of words. Practically everything in human life is now based on, or bound up with, language — spoken, written, printed, and increasingly produced and reproduced electronically. AI and chatbots are only the most recent development; as a result, our world is flooded with words in a way it never has been before.
Yet alongside this “Wordworld” there is also the “Worldword” — das Weltenwort, the Logos. How are the two connected? Can humanity survive the flood of words by finding a new connection to the Logos? As Noah was called to build an ark to save earthly life from the flood, might we be called to build an ark to save us from the flood of words?
This is the framework for our upcoming webinar. Five experienced linguists, translators, and language practitioners — Richard Steel, Frits Burger, Brook DeLorme, Angus Hawkins, and Joachim Faust — will explore what Rudolf Steiner called the “spirit” or “genius” of language, and ask whether the time has finally come for the “conscious development of a psychological science of language” that Steiner called for more than a hundred years ago.

CEO, Karl König Institute · Translator & Author
Richard Steel (b. 1952, Oxford) studied linguistics and trained in Curative Education at the Camphill Seminar in Germany. Since 2008 he has been co-responsible for the Literary Estate of Karl König and serves as CEO of the Karl König Institute for Art, Science, and Social Life. A writer, lecturer, and translator working in both English and German, he is responsible for the new edition of König's works; his latest translation is an English version of Rudolf Steiner's Calendar of the Soul (2024). Based in Berlin, he is helping develop a North American office of the Institute.
Linguist & Author, 'The Flow of Language'
Frits Burger (b. 1953) studied English and Old Germanic languages and, drawn to the origins of words, went on to study Hebrew and Sanskrit. Through Rudolf Steiner's work the origin of the word took on a spiritual dimension for him, and he devoted his life to helping people experience the spiritual side of language through a path he calls 'The Flow of Language,' on which he has written seven volumes. He worked for years with children in Camphill communities in Holland and, with Richard Steel, is preparing a book on Karl König's unpublished ideas about language.
Artist, Writer & Language Explorer
Brook DeLorme (b. 1979, Maine) is an artist and writer whose working life has spanned technology and apparel. A deep interest in languages led to self-directed explorations of German, French, Thai, and Arabic. Raised with anthroposophy in the background, DeLorme encountered spiritual science directly through Steiner's basic books in early adulthood, and co-founded the Roseanum Foundation, a nonprofit researching regenerative farming, community renewal, and off-grid technologies. DeLorme also writes the mystery-fiction series Apophenia Gold.
Language Teacher & Translator
Angus Hawkins (b. 1969, West Sussex) studied International Business and Languages and qualified as a teacher of German, French, and Religion. He taught at Steiner schools in Totnes and Alingsås, and for fifteen years ran his own language-training and translation business in the corporate world before returning to teaching Spanish and German. He completed a Master's in International Finance in 2019 and runs an online group in Sweden exploring the philosophical side of Steiner's work.
Linguist & Language Teacher
Joachim Faust (b. 1960, Mainz) is a linguist and language teacher who holds a Ph.D. in Slavic Languages and Literatures from the University of Kansas and a Master's in German linguistics from the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz. He has taught many languages at the college and high-school levels, along with linguistics and intercultural studies, drawing on years lived and worked in Russia, Poland, Hungary, Georgia, and China. His research centers on the age-old question of the nature of human language, for which the encounter with Rudolf Steiner has been a central inspiration.
