This talk was based on work I did with a young man suffering from severe digital addiction. Since I have practiced user experience design for web sites for 26 years, I understand how users can be “hooked”, as we say in the business, to a particular platform such as Facebook. While working with the young man, I studied the techniques for forming online user habits in detail.
For both gamblers and social media users, researchers have found the science of behavioral modification is being applied at scale to ensure a steady flow of profit for their parent companies.
This talk examines the techniques used to gain control over user attention and autonomy and their effects on young people in particular.
The talk ends by providing specific techniques based on anthroposophical principles to overcome online behavioral conditioning through smart social media usage.
