What is the MysTech Conference about?

MysTech is dedicated to driving positive change for our future by steering the role that technology will play in society and human evolution in the light of spiritual science. The past century has witnessed astonishing advances in technology that have impacted our day-to-day lives, health, and consciousness in profound and unexpected ways. When we consider the impact of technology in the context of our evolution as both physical and spiritual beings, how might it contribute to our future? Will continued advances in technology be a benefit or a burden for the potential of humankind? How must we respond to modern technological developments in order to shape the future towards the good?

In this conference you will gain new insights about the mysteries of technology from the perspectives of spiritual science through the original research of our distinguished speakers across a broad range of fascinating topics. You will also gain a new appreciation for social three-folding, biodynamics,  eurythmy, and more, and learn how these methods and thought-forms can help us to meet the coming challenges of the modern age.

From the physics of light to the Mysteries of Light

In ancient times, humanity was guided. By the 15th century, based on materialism and a separation from the spiritual world, individuals became active in their own thinking. The resulting phenomenology and reasoning opened the doors to Science. We’ll explore how the scientific concepts of both outer light and inner light have evolved to where we are now on the threshold of the Mysteries of Light. This keynote talk will explore the Mysteries of Light from the spiritual world to the world of sub-nature to establish a foundation for the conference’s presentations.

Light in Time and Space

Space only exists in the realm where our physical senses apply. Time only in a higher realm. Yet light exists in both. Andrew will explore light from super-nature to sub-nature.

Andrew Linnell, retired in 2013 after a 42-year career in the computer industry wherein Andrew had worked as CTO and VP for various companies, he now spends his time as a director of MysTech, a steering member of the Natural Science Section of the School for Spiritual Science, and admin for various Facebook groups devoted to the study of Anthroposophy. He is past president of the Boston branch, father of three, and the author of two children’s books, three art history books, and eight MysTech study guidebooks.

Darkness as a second nature of light

Light is deeply connected with inner and outer orientation, with insight and recognition. But for our ability to see something, darkness is as important as light itself – it is like a second nature of light. Light and darkness can be seen as two faces as of one rather than seeing in both a polarity. This is especially helpful to study the mutual dependency between both and in understanding the appearance of colors: any color shows the simultaneous coexistence of light and darkness and is constituted by this special relation.

Matthias Rang, is co-lead of the Natural Science Section of the School for Spiritual Science at the Goetheanum, Dornach. He studied physics in Freiburg, Germany and Berlin before becoming a visiting researcher in the field of nano-optics at the University of Washington, Seattle, USA. He received a PhD from the University of Wuppertal, Germany and carries out research on Goethe’s theory of color in relation to physical optics at the Goetheanum, Switzerland.

What Light Phenomena Can Teach Us

Rudolf Steiner once wrote: “Why don’t we have a true epistemology? Because, since the time when Berkleley wrote his book on ‘Seeing’, nobody related ‘Seeing’ to ‘Knowing’ in the right way.” (transl. HH)  Light phenomena are rich and unexaustibly manifold, and we are immersed in them every moment of our wakeful and not-so-wakeful life. Choosing light phenomena we are familiar with, I will highlight the significance of phenomenological science.

Henrike Holdrege studied mathematices and biology in Germany and was a public school teacher and later a Waldorf High School teacher. With her husband Craig Holdrege and their three children she emigrated to the US in 1992. In 1998, she co-founded The Nature Institute in Ghent, New York, and has worked and researched at the institute ever since. In courses and her writings, she strives to facilitate experienced-based study of natural phenomena as well as inner observation of thought.

The Role of Lux in the Evolution of Consciousness

What is light? Together we’ll marinate in this question by tracing a morphology of answers given by various cultures throughout history. An evolving relationship between humanity and light will become apparent, one that that might guide the actualization of a possible future wherein—as Rudolf Steiner, Teilhard de Chardin, and other seers have predicted—the Earth shall become a star. We’ll round out by considering how this applies to our personal growth as individuals and its relevance to the prospect of etheric technology.

Ashton K. Arnoldy is a Ph.D. candidate in the Philosophy, Cosmology, and Consciousness program at the California Institute of Integral Studies; his dissertation focuses on the recuperation of metanarrative in the work of Owen Barfield. He writes and creates digitally under the screenname @micr0k0sm.

Experiencing the Etheric Through Eurythmy

In the terminology of spiritual science, we identify the forces of consciousness as etheric, or life forces. It is precisely these forces that are adversely affected when we work excessively with electricity and with digital media. Eurythmy is a movement practice that engages precisely these etheric forces in a healing way, bringing to them enlivening and strengthening forces and acting as a counterbalance to the immersion in the demands of the digital world. Through eurythmy you may learn to activate your own sense of presence, of being really centered and awake in your inner being. This can lead to awareness of the etheric and to a broadening of consciousness.

Cynthia Hoven is an engaging eurythmist and lecturer, and has been bringing the deep wisdom of eurythmy and anthroposophy to life for audiences worldwide. In her 30-plus years of experience as a teacher, performer, trainer, therapist, coach, and adult educator. She has over 60 recordings of lessons on her website at https://eurythmyonline.com.

The Metamorphosis of Light in Life

How is a vessel that is suitable to contain and transform light into life processes created on earth? This talk will integrate observations from modern biochemistry and the phenomenological work of anthroposophical scientists and physicians. The vessels suitable to contain life are created mostly out of just four elements, Hydrogen, Carbon, Oxygen and Nitrogen.  The musical relationships of these elements will be experienced and briefly pondered.  The special role of the much smaller amounts of metals found in biological structures will be discussed in the light of the intrinsic nature of these metals and their relationships on earth and in the cosmos. This will be illustrated by examining chlorophyll and heme, the molecules standing in the center of light’s transformations. The exquisite geometry of these molecules evokes a sense of awe as it echoes ancient sacred wisdom.  Despite their striking similarity of form, their metals bring opposing impulses in the metamorphosis of light.  Light is captured by green chlorophyll and freed by red heme allowing it to emanate from human thoughts.

Judith Erb was born and raised in a North Dakota farming family. Judith’s early love for both chemistry and music led her to the University of California, Berkeley where she obtained her B.S in Chemistry with a minor in music. Her M.S in biochemistry comes from Cal Tech where she also completed candidacy requirements for her PhD.  In the early 1970s he joined the research faculty at Wayne State University and Lafayette Clinic in Detroit, Michigan where she researched and published work on hormonal desynchronization in schizophrenia.

While interrupting her professional work to raise her two children, she discovered Anthroposophy. through their experience as Waldorf students in Ann Arbor. She joined the School for Spiritual Science in 1995.   After attending the summer Waldorf teacher training programs at the Rudolf Steiner College in Sacramento, California, the Center for Anthroposophy in Wilton, N.H. and the Nature Institute in Ghent, NY, she became a middle school class teacher and was the Ann Arbor high school’s founding teacher in biology and chemistry.  There she wrote musicals in which the students sang and acted out characters having the essential nature of the material being explored through laboratory experimental work. Later, she and her physicist husband, Jim, founded a company, ThreeFold Sensors, which invented and patented sensitive fiber optic sensor instruments that measured the real time accumulation of specific fluorescent molecules.  They accomplished this by separating light’s magnetic field from its electric field. The evanescent field thus generated detected fluorescent molecules on fiber surfaces without detecting those in the surrounding solution.

Now, retired, she enjoys gardening with her grandchildren and worked with Arie Van Ameringen to translate into English Otto Wolff’s book entitled “Fundamentals of Biochemistry in the Light of Spiritual Science.  She currently serves on the Steering Committee of its Natural Science Section for North America.

Aspects of light

In the physical world – in the realm of life – in the sub-physical world

In the lecture I will explore the physical views of light as waves or particles by looking where they came up and where they are applied, then I will try to show a way of understanding it’s connection with life, what R. Steiner calls the etheric or “light ether”, and finally how that relates to the “sub-physical”, to electricity. For that it seems necessary to gain a different understanding of electricity than just speaking of electrons and charge.

Johannes Kühl was born 1953 in Hamburg, Germany. After finishing the Waldorfschool and civil service in biodynamic agriculture he studied physics and got his masters degree at the Max Planck Institute Göttingen in fluid dynamics. After one year of research he taught physics, chemistry and mathematics at a Waldorfschool from 1982 to 1996 . Since 1996 he was the leader of the science section at the Goetheanum, and a member of the  Goetheanum leadership. His main research interests are: Threshold experiences in science of the 20th century, atmospheric colours and goetheanistic optics and the relation of technology and human culture. He has four adult children and lives in Dornach, Switzerland.

Light – Our Greatest Teacher

In this session we will explore how physical and spiritual manifestations of light teach us much of what we know of Nature and the human condition. Light is always willing to reveal more to us about the world around us and the world within us, but sometimes we’re required to unlock a code to receive the message. Unlocking this code has been the work of scientists, artists and priests for thousands of years, with great strides being made on the physical plane in the last couple of centuries. Three physical optical phenomena – diffraction, interference, and optical resonance – will serve as jumping off points for an exploration of light from spirit depths, light from spirit heights and the illumination of human consciousness.

Dave Mansur has worked as an optical engineer for 40 years. He has put light to work to make ultra-precise measurements of position, angle, rate of rotation and to sense and identify a broad array of toxic and non-toxic chemicals. Dave has been a member of the Anthroposophical Society for over 30 years, serving recently as Treasurer of the Anthroposophical Society in America (US). He lives in Amesbury, MA with his wife, Mary, where they keep bees and entertain grandchildren.

Light as a Driver in Living Systems

Physical light opens a window to the world of nature and the cosmos around us – from the smallest to the largest structures. Inner light illumines the life and activity of spiritual beings that work within these realms. In my talk, I will explore how light resonates in living systems and serves the as a key driver of our evolution. I will also highlight some relationships between light in nature and light as a manifestation of spiritual activity as elucidated by spiritual science.

Doug Smith received his PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from Cornell University in 1981. His professional career has focused on research and development in human genetics, genome sequencing (including the human genome), and diagnostics. His current work focuses on the application of new technologies to ensure the safety of CRISPR genome editing therapies. In parallel, Doug has maintained a long-term interest in exploring Anthroposophical spiritual science and the hidden world of spiritual beings that drive human evolution. Learning how to navigate both inner spiritual and outer scientific paths has been a lifelong endeavor and challenge for him.

Reimagining Light & Matter

Implications for Innovating Spiritual Technologies

John Ech aims to unveil alternative concepts of light and matter, derived from imaginative cognition and experimental practices outside the conventional bounds of peer-reviewed science. Drawing from a mix of Anthroposophical and Goethean research, alongside the concepts of Sympathetic Vibratory Physics luminaries like Jon Keely, Walter Russell, Edwin Babbitt, Gustav Lebon, and Nikola Tesla, a case will be laid against the formal corpuscular based models of light. In addition, other modern, non-dogmatic concepts will be discussed such as Edward Dowdye’s Re-Emissions Theory, Jon Milewski’s Superlight and Michael Evans Trion-Re. In presenting these alternative concepts, John will challenge the traditional reductionist view of light as a wave-particle duality, with a motion confined to a fixed speed – a conceptual result from conflating cause with effect.

After evaluating conventional theories and presenting alternatives, John will explore their practical applications of light for human health. He will discuss a range of therapies, from simple color treatments like Dinshah Ghadiali’s Spectro-chrome to advanced approaches such as Fritz Popp’s Bio-photonics. Additionally, John will cover the current developments of plasmonic and solid-state materials that serve as evidence-based counterbalances against the increasing impact of electromagnetic radiation and its effects on biological health.

John Ech blends his formal education in engineering and biological sciences with a deep yearning to decipher the relationship between the physical and supersensible realms. Initially disenchanted by the mechanistic worldview that dominated his education, John’s journey from atheism and reductionism to a spiritual science was sparked by a profound passage on “energy and atoms” he read during a Buddhism class in college — concepts he now views with intense skepticism but found conceptually transformative at the time. This shift was deepened by powerfully introspective entheogenic experiences, leading him to delve into the untapped potentials of the human mind. He found the explanations offered by quantum mechanics not only redundant but frustratingly inadequate, fueling a growing disillusionment with the mainstream scientific narrative. This dissatisfaction persisted until he discovered the Journal of Borderland Research, which opened his eyes to alternative scientific perspectives free from the conventional “quantum woo,” offering a refreshing and enlightening new approach to understanding his relationship with the cosmos.

Etheric Imagination as Participatory Knowing

Crossing the Kantian Threshold

Kant stands at the threshold of supersensible knowledge, demanding of the would be spiritual scientist that they meet the critical challenge of his transcendental epistemology. Drawing inspiration from Rudolf Steiner’s Light Course (GA 320), as well as the kindred organic cosmologies of Friedrich Schelling and Alfred North Whitehead, this talk outlines a natural philosophical pathway beyond the sense-bound intellect through the cultivation of a new organ of cognitive perception: the etheric imagination.

Matthew David Segall, Ph.D., is a transdisciplinary researcher, writer, teacher, and philosopher applying process-relational thought across the natural and social sciences, as well as to the study of consciousness. He is Associate Professor in the Philosophy, Cosmology, and Consciousness Department at California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco, and the Chair of the Science Advisory Committee for the Cobb Institute. He is the author of numerous articles and chapters, and most recently the book Crossing the Threshold: Etheric Imagination in the Post-Kantian Process Philosophy of Schelling and Whitehead (Revelore, 2023).

Confusing Good and Evil while Considering Light as Electricity

The cosmic command “Let there be Light” marks a crucial moment in the story of our creation. This command triggers a profound transformation of Earth and humanity, alongside the emergence of etheric essences—the basic building blocks of life and light. When humans saw light not just as something around us, but as something within us, it started a journey of self-awareness and exploration. In this journey, we have uncovered a crucial truth: when we do not fully understand the world, we become vulnerable to negative influences. Forces like Ahrimanic and Luciferic can have a strong hold on us if we do not operate in our environment consciously. For example, if we see light only in terms of electricity, we miss out on its true “Divinity of Good” nature. Light is not just a physical phenomenon; it carries deeper meaning and significance.

The phenomena of sound and tone, like the conscious element of thought and ideation, stand in contrast to electricity and magnetism, which are analogous to the subconscious element of will. Warmth serves as an intermediary between these two realms. Just as feeling bridges the gap between thought and will, outer warmth in nature bridges the gap between light and sound, as well as electricity and magnetism.

In our scientific and spiritual exploration, we endeavor to unravel the essence of light and sound, contrasted against the opposing forces of electricity and magnetism, all while recognizing the pivotal role of warmth as a mediator between these realms. Through this holistic understanding, we are embracing the interconnectedness of all things.

Igor Nazarov earned a Ph.D. in Chemicals Physics at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, USSR where he served as Assistant Dean until 1990. In 1983, his collaboration with Dr. Yury Kronn, the inventor of Vital Force Technology (VFT) began. This brought him to the works of Rudolf Steiner and other great minds experimentally exploring light as a manifestation of the spiritual world. After immigrating to the USA in 1990, he continued collaborating with different institutions exploring “subtle energy” properties. Recently, Igor Nazarov worked at a non-profit MIG-Tech Lab to develop a new Multidimensional Imaging Technology (MIG) based on non-linear light-matter interaction. Dr. Nazarov is an author of over 30 scientific publications and a book.

Light, Sight, and Enlightenment

Light manifests physically, as soul experience, and spiritually. Waldorf high school teachers Harlan Gilbert and Cedar Oliver will explore the position of light as a mediator between these three realms, revealing the active inter-relationship of spirit and matter and the intimate mystery of how seeing enlightens being.

Questions we will explore include: What is the world like from light’s frame of reference?  From the phenomenological experience of seeing through the biology of the human visual sensory system and shared cultural-linguistic context of what can be seen, is it possible to arrive at shared, objective concepts of the physical and spiritual reality of light?

Student experiences and artwork will inform the presentation.

Dick “Cedar” Oliver, a science, math, technology, and design teacher in Waldorf high schools and middle schools for over 20 years, Cedar is also the author and co-author of numerous books and software titles and has worked with scientists, mathematicians, engineers and artists around the world. He is currently a visiting teacher and faculty mentor at several U.S. Waldorf schools and the Center for Anthroposophy Waldorf High School Teacher Education Program.

Harlan Gilbert, since 2003, Harlan has taught mathematics, astronomy, physics, computer science, and philosophy at Green Meadow Waldorf School and, in parallel, anthroposophical studies and Waldorf pedagogy at various teacher training centers in the US and abroad.  He has written and lectured extensively on themes including anthroposophy, pedagogy, and science.
